Certeco Launches “The DigiLab” a Mobile Testing Service

Certeco, a leading business technology change consultancy, has today announced the launch of its pop up mobile application testing service “DigiLab” for testing of mobile initiatives being implemented by financial services corporations.

The service enables companies to host their own bespoke, mobile application testing lab. The service is designed to accelerate manual testing, automated testing, performance testing and post-production monitoring on mobile applications and enables them to scale their testing capabilities up or down with minimal risk.

The service focuses on testing the customer experience of companies’ mobile services across different handsets, tablet devices as well as across networks – the service can test the functionality of an application when it moves from a 3G to a 4G area, for example. As Mark Till, Solutions Architect at Certeco explains: “Some applications are very ‘chatty’ in the sense they use a lot of data packages and interact frequently between the device and the server – a chatty app will run faster in areas of good connectivity. Organisations need to deliver speed to market and a quality customer experience and this service helps them to do that.”

Graham Smith, Director of Services and Solutions at Certeco commented: “The consumer appetite for mobile services is insatiable and corporates are under pressure to deliver mobile services – that provide a great customer experience – to the market as quickly as possible.

The problem is that iterations of applications are being released so rapidly, organisations are struggling to keep up with testing them. But if a company takes its eye off the testing ball, that’s when accidents can happen. The fall out in terms of reputational damage and loss of business can be significant. So this service is geared towards making mobile application testing more flexible, rapid and precise so organisations won’t put a foot wrong.”

SmartBear announces new API readiness platform to assist development, testing and operations teams with expanding API economy

SmartBear Software, the choice of more than two million software professionals for building and delivering the world’s best applications, today announced Ready! API, the first end-to-end platform for assisting development, testing and operations teams with the expanding API economy. Integrated, extensible and affordable, Ready! API is built around the core of the award winning, industry dominating SoapUI open source tool.

Fueled by the advent of service oriented architectures, mobile technologies and the Internet of Things, APIs are the backbone of most software applications today. Recent analyst predictions say that by 2016, the number of open APIs will hit 30,000. Today, there are more than 1.252 billion API requests made each hour. Social media APIs alone have grown by almost 300 percent since 2009.

To meet this staggering growth and load, APIs must be extremely reliable, scalable and secure even while release cycles are short and teams often have to test an API while still in development. A different approach to the development, testing and monitoring of APIs is required. First, the proliferation of non-integrated point tools for different phases of the API lifecycle has created a silo approach that complicates the development process, slows time to market, and reduces API quality. Second, so called enterprise API development frameworks have extracted exorbitant fees for such areas as service virtualization, placing key functionality out of reach for many developers.  The API economy demands exactly the opposite dynamic where more high quality, integrated development, testing and monitoring tools are in the hands of millions of developers at an affordable price.

Ready! API is the industry’s first fully integrated, extensible and affordable platform to help teams build reliable, scalable and secure APIs. Using the industry’s leading open source application SoapUI as its core, Ready! API builds on years of development and customer feedback to create an API platform for the new API economy.  Ready! API is composed initially of four applications, each of which can be purchased separately. The four applications include:

  • TestUI  – for testing all Web services, including REST and SOAP APIs
  • LoadUI  –  for load testing of APIs to ensure they meet high performance demands
  • ServiceV – for creating, managing and sharing virtualized assets
  • Secure – for conducting security scans against APIs

In addition, the Ready! API platform contains common services such as a plug-in manager, reporting engine and metrics, and script support for advanced users. These common services provide an extensible framework for added functionality and easy interoperability while building and testing APIs.

“We are expanding on the same model of affordable, yet extensible software that made SoapUI the leading API testing tool in the world,” said Ole Lensmar, CTO of SmartBear. “Ready! API provides a powerful set of individually purchased tools for API development, testing and monitoring in an integrated package. For areas such as service virtualization where applications have been priced out of reach for most developers, Ready! API provides a welcome relief and way to get the right tools into the hands of all developers.”

RGB Networks Aims To Change Video Industry With Pioneering Open Source Software Transcoder Initiative

RGB Networks Aims To Change Video Industry With Pioneering Open Source Software Transcoder Initiative

‘RipCode Transcoder’ will be the video industry’s first open source professional cloud-enabled software transcoder platform

RGB Networks, the leading provider of the industry’s most scalable and unified solutions for multiscreen video delivery, has announced that it is developing an open source version of its popular TransAct Transcoder.

Called ‘Ripcode Transcoder’, after the company Ripcode, which was acquired by RGB Networks in 2010 and which originally developed TransAct, the new, cloud-enabled software transcoder will provide RGB Networks’ customers with greater control, integration and flexibility in their video delivery workflows. In a pioneering move, and harnessing the industry momentum toward developing cloud-based solutions, RGB Networks is actively welcoming operators and vendors to be part of a community of contributors to the open source project.

RGB Networks’ CloudXtream solution for nDVR and dynamic Ad Insertion for Multiscreen (AIM) environments, launched in October 2013 and built on the industry standard open source cloud operating system OpenStack, has paved the way for this latest innovation. The company intends to build on this success with RipCode, which will be an “open core” project, where the core technology from the

TransAct Transcoder is being used to create the foundations of the open source project. Suitable for a variety of applications, the RipCode Transcoder will include the full feature set expected of an industrial-strength, professional transcoder, leaving customers open to select and integrate the packaging solution of their choice necessary to produce their desired Adaptive Bit Rate output formats.

“The IPTV industry has finally embraced the cloud. And, at RGB Networks, we recognize how open source projects like this can help promote the use of standard APIs which make it much easier for vendor-to-vendor integration and for video service providers to migrate to a cloud-based video delivery model,” said Andy Salo, VP of product management at RGB Networks. “We look forward to working with the open source community of other video-related open source software at this exciting time in the industry to open source the RipCode Transcoder with optimal integration and code contributions.”

The intended feature set of the open source RipCode Transcoder will include:

  • Both Linear (live) and Video on Demand (VOD) transcoding
  • Full cluster management, load balancing, and failover
  • Linear and VOD transcoding of MPEG2, H.264, H.265, AAC, AC3, and other  industry leading video and audio codecs
  • File-to-File watch folders
  • Full reporting and logging of events
  • Commercial-grade GUI

Unlike other open source projects, an open source transcoder is more difficult to release due to built-in professional codec licensing. RGB Networks will release RipCode Transcoder with only the codecs that can be legally used with open source software. Additionally, in order to facilitate use of the transcoder in professional environments that require licensed, third party codecs and pre/post processing filters, the RipCode transcoder will include a plug-in framework, that will allow use of best-of-breed codecs and filters. A number of vendors of such components and related technologies have expressed interest in participating in the RipCode initiative including the following:

Video Codecs (including H.264/AVC and H.265/HEVC): eBrisk Video, Intel Media Server Studio, Ittiam Systems, MainConcept (A DivX company), Multicoreware, NGCodec (providing HW acceleration for H.264/AVC and H.265/HEVC), Squid Systems, Vanguard Video Audio Codecs: Dolby Laboratories, Fraunhofer IIS Video Optimization: Beamr

“We are glad to see the support of many companies in the early stage of this open source initiative, unique in our industry” said Simone Sassoli, VP Marketing and Business development at RGB Networks. “In addition to technology vendors and solution providers, we’ve had a very positive reception from major service providers like Comcast, Charter and Rogers and we expect to announce additional key partners planning to contribute to the open source effort to help accelerate innovation and adoption.”

Luis E. Vielma Ordóñez, Chief Operating Officer of Telecable, commented: “This initiative represents a game changer for the deployment of a next generation television services. It can deliver faster time to market and substantially lower licensing and maintenance costs than other solutions. Open source software delivers comparable features and quality with greater deployment flexibility, enabling a high innovation velocity for our services.”

The release of the first version of RipCode Transcoder – 1.0 – with all the appropriate licensing is targeted for Q1 2015.
